about

This is an incomplete set of words for the fourth tune we wrote. It takes as it’s starting point a lyrical theme I developed with Hiram and was in fact the title track to Hiram’s 2007 album “If Up Were Along”. There, I used building as a metaphor – the key passage being ‘If up were along, my proud towers would reach high’ by which I was trying to express the idea of apparent worthlessness of great effort when it is dedicated to an aim that is antagonistic to the incumbent paradigm. It was about feeling that, try as one might, if you attempt to work outside the accepted mainstream you will not merely fail, but you will spend yourself in the process.

Here, with this set of words, I take the concept and respond to it positively... the idea being that building and construction are metaphors for the artificial social and economic edifices which human imposes upon human and that one should develop a more synergistic approach to progress and development – symbolised by the act of tending crops.

The title has 2 meanings; the obvious, anti-hierarchical idea behind self-management - ultimately the key to meaningful work... but also, it is meant to suggest the eradication of the ‘inner boss’ or the institutional, corporate alter-ego we are all forced to develop in order to ‘get on in life’...

lyrics

Kill Your Boss

My face smeared clear of tears,
All my toil broke.
Through the dust and rubble,
Green shoots hint at hope!

Who says life is shirt,
Brief days belong alone to Youth!
And though it's known that life is oh so long,
Few see blessings accumulate.

No reward for Life's labour.
For pay, I would gladly kill!

Stone, squared by chisel and plumb,
Will crumble and weather in to motes.
And in the slime I will till and sow,
The harvest will repay my toil!

But I've seen a man surrender,
And it damned both him and me!
He didn't pick a single fight that he entered,
And this ain't the way it has to be!

Bricks and mortar, proud structures;
Real? What's real when they fall?

Plant a seed - Crops will feed.

No ammount of construction,
can stop the surge of the well loved roots!

You can't stop the surge of the well loved roots!
You can't stop the surge!
